Boy Who Suffered Birth Injuries Wins Record Compensation

Published: 06 July 2014, in categories: Personal Injury Updates | Legal Updates | News and Updates

A seven-year-old boy, who is facing a lifetime of catastrophic disability after he was born 25 minutes later than he should have been, has achieved a record settlement from his local NHS Trust.

The boy's heart rate had slowed drastically before his delivery but the emergency was not responded to promptly by medical staff, which resulted in oxygen starvation and acute brain damage. As a result, he now suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and a severe learning disability and is registered blind. He will require 24-hour care for life.

After proceedings were launched, the NHS Trust responsible for the hospital where the boy was born agreed to a settlement of his claim. As well as a £2 million lump sum, he will receive annual, index-linked payments of up to £490,000 to cover the costs of his care for as long as he lives. The case is believed to be the largest settlement of its kind.

A disastrous lapse of care during his birth has had a life-changing effect not just on the boy but on his entire family and all those close to them. The final settlement will give the family peace of mind that he will receive the best possible care and rehabilitation for the rest of his life.

If you or a member of your family has been injured as a result of negligent medical treatment, we can advise you.
