A father who suffered devastating injuries in a running down accident has won a £6.1 million compensation pay-out from motor insurers. The once supremely fit scaffolder was aged just 21 when he was knocked down by a car, leaving him wheelchair-dependent, prone to epilepsy and in need of round-the-clock care.
On his behalf, his lawyers sued the insurers of the motorist who hit him and achieved the lump sum settlement of his claim on the basis of 75% liability. Although he had been resident in a care home since the accident, attempts were being made to move him into a bungalow of his own where he could be looked after by a professional team of carers.
In approving the compromise, a judge commended the man’s family for their selfless commitment to his care since the accident. He commented: "This is a sad case in which a fit and lively man of 21 suffered a serious motor accident. He has suffered the most terrible loss and is not himself any more in many ways. He needs to be looked after for the rest of his life. I extend my sympathy to him and his family".
